Choosing the right lithium battery for your electric bike or scooter motor isn’t just about power—it’s about safety, efficiency, and longevity. Here’s how to match them like a pro:
1️⃣ Voltage: Match Exactly!
Your battery’s nominal voltage must match your motor’s rated voltage (e.g., 36V, 48V, 52V).
⚠️ Mismatch risks:
Undervoltage: Poor performance, overheating.
Overvoltage: Permanent motor/controller damage.
2️⃣ Current: Plan for Peaks
Continuous Current:
Ensure the battery’s BMS continuous discharge rating (e.g., 30A) ≥ motor’s continuous current draw.
Peak Current:
Battery’s peak discharge rating (e.g., 50A) must cover motor surges (e.g., hill starts).
🔋 Tip: A 250W motor @ 48V draws ~5.2A continuous, but needs 15–30A+ for peaks!
3️⃣ Capacity (Ah): Range = Voltage × Amp-Hours
Higher Ah = Longer range (e.g., 48V 20Ah = 960Wh).
⚖️ Balance weight vs. range: Bigger batteries add bulk.
4️⃣ Connectors & Wiring
Use connectors rated for peak current (e.g., XT90 for 50A+).
Thick wires (10–8 AWG) minimize voltage drop and heat.
⚡ The Golden Rule
Battery Specs ≥ Motor’s Max Demands
(Voltage: Match | Current: Exceed | Capacity: Suit Your Range)
🛠️ Example Pairing
Motor: 48V 500W (Peak: 25–40A)
Ideal Battery:
BMS: 40A continuous / 60A peak
Why This Matters:
✅ Prevents BMS cutoffs
✅ Avoids melted wires/fuses
✅ Maximizes battery lifespan
✅ Unlocks full motor potential
